JAIN DHARMA – SCIENTIFICALLY

Can you measure the end of the sky?

Can you take out all the sea water?

Can you count the stars?

All such things are impossible; in the same way the secrets or elements of Jainism are not easy to understand. Still this religion has never ignored reality. It has not ignored human life of even the existence of very little insects. The principles of Jain religion seem very strict and strong but they are not against human body or any bodily suppression. They are about “Love to all” as well as “Love to self.” This is the way to upliftment.

In his article named ‘Science and Religion,’ Albert Einstein says “Science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind.”Jainism is the combination of both these things so; Jainism is based on scientific theory. All the living and non-living in the universe and the views about them are involved in Jainism. Further Einstein says, “I believe any human being who is cultured or who has religious outlook and religious-centered interest, has the capacity of becoming free from the selfish motive.”

The following theories or rules are said to be observed: to drink boiled water, abandonment of eating after sunset, abandonment of eating green vegetables on some Parva Tithis (pious days), abandonment of eating Maha-Vigais such as honey, observing Bhramacharya and Tap Dharma etc. These principles are based on some particular factual scientific reasons. They are also to maintain physical hygiene. They are also important to practice Jayana (sympathy for all the living).

For example, why should one drink boiled water?

There is a rule in Jainism, that boiled water should be drunk as far as possible. Jain monks (Sadhu and Sadhvi) and people who do any Tapascharyas (Fasts, Aayambils etc), have to drink only boiled water. There is scientific reason behind it. There are two types of atoms in each and every drop of liquid – positive and negative. As the water of any well, river, pond or rainy water has the element of salt, there are more negative atoms in such simple (no boiled) water. This type of water seems fresh but they are responsible for some diseases. But if this water is boiled, the negative atoms are destroyed. This can control so many diseases,Secondly in simple (unboiled) water the birth and death of the water-insects take place continuously. It is stopped in boiled water, so boiled water is helpful to the mind, body and soul.Today, we can see that water-pollution is a cause of ill-health. Lord Mahavir foretold this a long time ago. Boiled water is better than Bisleri water. So it is accepted that boiled water is more helpful than cold ( unboiled) water.

What is the reason behind observing Tap Dharma (Penance)?

There are two types of Tapdharma, 1) Bahya  (Internal) Tap  and 2) Aabhyantara (External) TapSome people say that Tap Dharma is not necessary. The tapa which is observed through mind -inner mind is true and useful. Tap without understanding is quite meaningless. But the rules during any Fast, Ayambil, Ekasana etc. are also based on scientific rules and secrets. They are helpful at any time.

Why eating after sunset (eating at night –Ratri Bhojan) is prohibited ?

Not only Mahavir but other saints in other religions showed the ways of controlling our food intake. Science says that the digesting process in our body becomes very slow after sunset. It is the cause of indigestion. This invites many diseases. In other words, these three elements are the responsible factors of any disease.Sometimes it is argued that there is no objection if the food is fresh and hot. But many types of micro insects are existed in absence of the sun. These types of insects enter our body with food. They upset our balanced hygiene. They are the causes of illness, uneasiness, mood-out condition and these things affect our nature.  So the prevention of eating at night can prevent all these things.

In the same way in Ekashanas, Aayambils etc, our body-organs work regularly. So the freshness of our body is maintained. Sufficient oxygen can be reached. Our heart and lungs can work without any burden. So three humours bile, wind and cough (Pitta,Vayu and cough)are also balanced. Fasts of two or three days can help in cleaning the whole body. In Jainism one fast during 15 days or Aayambil within these days should be observed. A big Tapa should also be done during a month. Tap (penance) is done as repentance. Some people complain about weakness and other effects of  the above three. In short the hygiene remains good if   tap is observed and there is scientific base behind it.

Why eating roots should be prohibited?

It is a scientific truth that the main part of any living being is cell. The body of any living being is made up of thousands of such cells. In the underground vegetables, so many living things born and die in a single atom of the vegetable. So every living cell dies continuously. So eating of an underground vegetable is prohibited in Jainism. There is one term in Jainism. It is ‘Anantkaya’ beings. In Jainism Anantkaya beings are defined in this way, ‘Any vegetable that can be cut into two equal parts or there is no seed and fiber are Anantkaya. They can be grown again by planting any piece of such vegetable. Now let us discuss about some vegetables.

Groundnuts:Groundnut is grown as underground vegetables but there are no features of the Anantkaya, so it is considered as eatable thing.

Brinjal :It has many seeds, so it is considered as Bahubij vegetable. Besides, it has also some Tamasi effect on human nature so it is prohibited in Jainism.

Ginger:The fresh ginger and turmeric are considered as Anantkaya but when they become completely dry this quality is removed. They are used as medicines mostly, so they are considered as eatable things.

Honey, Butter, Cheese, Meat, Wine etc.

In the above things, small germs are created because of the contact with air. It is said that a lot of micro germs take birth and perish at every moment. They also upset own mind. Intellect becomes corrupt. Liquor or wind distortsour faculty of thinking. The eating of these things make us week. So we can’t develop the power of our soul. So, in Jainism the protection of micro germs is given importance. One more thing is important. Killing of living beings, even of small insects is prohibited. It has been proven scientifically now that even plant has a life.If a person practices any immoral things or cheating, unjust attitude towards others is also one type of violent act or it is more than killing germs. It is also prohibited in Jainism of Lord Mahavir. The people who do such type of activities are considered sinful. Even though they are Jain by birth, they are not Jain by act. So non-violence at every stage and of every type should be practiced.

Now, the principles of Jainism are supported by modern science. Human welfare is hidden in each and every principle. They are proved in the laboratory of Kevalgyan – the supreme knowledge. They are proved by observation, logical thinking and illustrations. In this way, Jainism has become humanity centered religion. Love to each and all is the main idea here.

Night will pass even though the people sleep or not. Rivers will flow if even if the people take bath or not. Moments will pass though some understand or not. Intelligence will not be there without having the Tatvagyan.

Have you ever thought that from which things has this world been made? How many original things are there in this visible world? Which element is responsible for the strange condition or circumstances happening in this world? We can see that, some people are very intelligent while some totally lack intelligence. Some have so many things to eat but they can’t digest them, while some have nothing to eat. One is such as rich as a king, while the other is quite poor. Which thing is there for all these differences? Have you ever thought the reason behind this?

In Jainsim, we find the reasons of it. There is one thing which may or may not see with our eyes or can’t be understood with our intelligence. This thing is an element (Tatva). For example, Chetan tatva, Jad tatva. These two elements are connected through the ages, sometimes we can’t understand the difference between them, it is difficult to say what Jiva is and what Jada (Ajiva) is. Even our computer type mind is unable to find the difference. But Lord Mahavir had this understanding. In the ‘Utaradhyan sutra’, it is shown that, it is called Jiva in which there is Knowledge, Feellings and Sangna. Besides these twoelements i.e. Jiva and Ajiva, there are seven elements known as 1. Punya 2. Pap 3.  Aasrava 4.  Samvar  5. Bandha       6. Nirjara, and  7. Moksha.

All the things are included in Jiva and Ajiva elements.

The remaining seven elements are helpful to know the soul and to get Moksha.

Six things/substances which are in or out of fourteen Rajloks are also considered as elements. They are (1) Dharamastikaya (2) Adharamastikaya, (3) Aakashastikaya (4) Pudgalistikaya (5) Jivastikaya and (6) the knowledge of kal (time) and the following Nine elements (fundamentals) are the base of the knowledge of the whole world (Jagata).

1.    Jiva/tatva: The living beings, the birds, animals and earth (mati), water, fire, wind and vegetation are considered as Jiva Tatva. Scientists have also accepted this. There are fourteen types of JIva.

2.    Ajivtatva: Substance without life and feeling are called ‘jad or inanimate.’ They are Ajiv tatv. Dharamastikaya, Adharamastikaya, Aakashastikaya. Pudgal and Kal are also considered as Ajiv tatva. This element is helpful to Jiva tatva Can’t move without it. There are also fourteen types of Ajiv tatva

3. Punya Tatva: This element gives all the happiness and respect. This helps to feel happiness but who forgets the reality of soul, has to suffer ruin. All are mad behind this physical and happiness. Its types are forty two.

4. Pap Tatva: the feelings of unhappiness, worries difficulties unsafe, fear are due to this tatva. In this, Jiva is confused and feels so much sadness. Here, the types of its differences are eighty two.

5.  Ashrav element: The causes of punya tatva and pap tatva are known as asrava tatva. Lack of true vision and improper actions of the five sense, anger etc. are bad feelings. This is called ‘Asrav.’ Its types are forty two.

6. Sanvar element : Freedom from the bondage and effect of evil omens is called sanvar tatva. In this element it is said that observing samyak (good) deeds; controlling the evil karams away, bearing the difficulties without any questions, observing sadhu dharma etc. The differences of this element are fifty seven.

7. Nirjara element: To make the atma free from the bondage of all the karmas – good or bad, is the nirjara element. Bahya and Abhyantara tap are done to get this element. Thus, the cleanliness of atma from the bondage of karma is nirjara. The types of nirjara are twelve.

8. Bandha tatva: The element which decides the nature, condition, interest and space is called Bandha tatva. What will be the nature of karma, what will be the results of the effect, etc. can be decided through this karma. Its types are four.

9. Moksha tatva: The freedom of the atma from all types of karmas forever is called ‘Moksha’ when atma becomes ‘vitarag.’ When atma destroys the four ‘Aghati karmas it becomes the ‘Siddha.’ This situation is called moksha tatva. Its types are nine.

All the above described process can’t be seen; touch or smell with different senses. As a seed can’t be seen because it is in the earth, here karmas can’t be seen, but they are true and effecting the birth and rebirth. In this way, Jain Darshan gives knowledge about the whole world. It also shows the remedies of the elements.

What is Jainism?

To observe religion, means, to go to any temple or count the beads, to ask for something, or to worship god for improving health; to remove difficulties, etc. is religion. All these beliefs about religion are nothing but the wrong and superfluous ways.Jainism is against this. According to Jainism, a religion is not any type of rituals. It is also not a business of buying and selling. It is also not to waste the time.   Some rigid people wrongly try to spread religion but their ways are wrong. Then the fundamental question is what true religion is?To express the original nature is a religion because it is the voice of the soul. To see the soul in a right and proper way is religion. The whole universe is truth. God or the super element is infinite and unknown. The soul is immortal. To know this immortal sole is true. The Jainism shows this truth.

The above discussed power is considered great. This type of super power is known as ‘Tirthankar”. We can make own life better by observing the rules shown by the Tirthankars because we are inexperienced. We are bound with the bondage of ‘Maya’. We can’t know our karmas but we say that we know everything.

The wonderful matters in Jainism, shows that the following important things to know the original nature of soul. They are as under:

1.    You live among all the living beings, so please try to understand that each is equal to others. Love each and all, you will happy then.

2.    If you find the other others happy, you try to feel happiness in it

3.    Please be kind to others, if you get power or wealth.

4.    Don’t try to establish any power over them. Do it on yourself.

5.    The Jainism is a true path of living a better  and contented life

6.    It is based on purely science with logical sense.

7.    It is a non-violent way to make the body and mind pious in all the senses.

8.    The rules and principles of Jainism is a philosophical path for the welfare of all living beings without creating any pollution.

9.  “Happiness to all” is the motto of Jainism. It is an eternal path to get eternal truth.

The theory and rules of Jainism can give the new and true direction to make the life happy and pleasant.

Environment and Jainism

The development of materialism and science has completely changed the world. Man has become blind behind science and technology. So, the power of nature is ruined. Man can fly like a bird in the sky and swim like a fish in the water. He has made the world narrow with the help of the computer. The developing path of the 21st century has been started now. The creation of ‘cloning man’ is a great surprise to the intellectual people also. But the dangerous problems behind this development are very risky because they are like burning flames. Now the burning problem is this:

Can this materialistic way of development bring happiness in the world?

What is environment?

The role of nature is very important in the natural life of man. Clean air, pure water, food, clothes and house are the basic needs. It is necessary to have pure water, fresh air, enough land and vegetation to live and stay and all the living beings- birds and animals can live safely, rivers without pollution and protection of cows, land, water, and forests etc. are the signs of good environment. All these will give heavenly peace  and pleasure to all.

Achievements have become problems

Today the atmosphere has been polluted with the development of the giant machines. The land of    the earth has become barren because of the cutting of trees. There are polluted chemicals and the ozone layer has been breaking now. There are so many problems of flood, famine, starvation, diseases, unemployment. The selfish motives are found in the development of multi-national companies. So the whole world is surrounded by the above problems. People want peace now.In the famous book, Asking for the Earth, a famous genius in the field of environment, Jame George, wrote, “The selfish man has ruined the whole earth for his selfish motive” According to the last research of the world bank, “There will be a terrific war for the problem of water in the 21st century if there will not be water rationing.” (Tofler in the third wave) His words, “Achievements have become problems.”

Now it is proved that every living being is lacking the natural life. Every nation is interested in making the terrific weapons. The natural resources are destroyed. So the human existence is in danger. So the thinkers of the whole world are in worry. So it is necessary to find any way to control all the solution.

The vast vision of Jainism

Now, it is accepted that the principles of Jainism are quite appropriate in the present situation.

In the Tatvartha Sutra -5-21 it is written that “The living beings are mutually helpful. They are interdependent. In the Dash Vaikalik Sutra – 6 -11 it is written that”Every living being wants to live not to die.”  In Jainism, not only human being, but vegetation, earth, water, wind, fire etc. are considered as living beings. Up to now, everything was safe and there were no any problem in the balance of nature. The rivers were full of water, the land was fertile, animals could get enough grass to eat, the basic needs were fulfilled and there was no pollution at any place. But now everything is full of problems as discussed in the beginning. In this condition, the principles of Jainism are useful because they are based on non-violence. Now we should observe the following rules to save all the living beings:

Observe the following to protect the envioronment

1.    Use only those things, which are really necessary. Don’t buy unnecessary things, so the pollution can be controlled.

2.    The habit of collecting things more than necessity should be removed. Be helpful to others.

3.    Learn to use fewer things than necessity.

4.    ‘Live and let live’ should be accepted as a rule and be kind to others.

5.    Love all the living beings and respect them

6.    Keep the values of the protection of earth, water, cows/animals, plantation, etc. and stop doing any harm to them.

All the above things are based on Jainism. So please try to obey them with respect. Now it is accepted by the intelligent people also, that the science and technology have given materialistic comforts, but mental peace is ruined. So we should go back to nature to get mental peace. And in Jainism, it is a truth that nature is the best resource of getting real happiness.
