Meditation is nothing else but to concentrate the thinking process into one specific subject. According to Jain belief meditation is a special power of soul. The quiet certain form of soul is meditation. Meditation could be both good as well as evil.

1.         Good Meditation :   If the meditation is done with good thinking process, the collected both deeds and sins are destroyed and the soul becomes pure.

2.         Meditation with bad thoughts / evil thinking process : the Meditation with evil thoughts results into earning of fresh sins and the soul becomes impure.

Both good thought and evil thoughts have four sub-division.

1.         Art Dhyana :Meditation with expectations of worldly matters. To worry for getting what you like and to give up what you donot like, to become angry or to become greedy, to weep when there are some worldly unhappening, to express the feelings of unhappiness etc. are included in Art-Dhyana. (evil meditation) the 4 sub-division are (1) getting what you donot like (2) to be away from the nearest and dearest, (3) to worry about the illness and Nidan such evil meditation leads to hellish position after death.

2.            Raudra Dhyana : (meditation for sinful activities) to think about only wrongful activities like theft, violence, telling a lie, passionate activity4 possessiveness etc. are included in Raudra Dhyana such meditation becomes hindrance against development of soul. The four sub-divisions are meditation (1) regarding violence, (2) regarding telling a lie, (3) regarding committing theft or possessiveness and (4) regarding passionate love. This kind of meditation surely leads to hell. There is unhappiness in this birth as well as birth beyond.

3.            Religious meditation: life becomes pure and holy with mind’s good thoughts and good activities. This is known as Religious meditation. With religious meditation, the soul gets better specie; become God.

4.            Positive Meditation : When a person realizes about pure form of soul, when there is self realization; it is Shukla (positive) meditation. In this meditation, a person gives up all kinds of Mohas(Passions). When all faults are destroyed; this type of meditation is realised. With such meditation, the soul gets rebirth in God’s beings or gets ultimate knowledge- Keval Gyana.

Yoga

In Jainism yogas, are known from ancient period.

Characteristics of Yoga.- Patanjali has defined yoga as control of mind’s desires. The Jain scholars have told those activities as yoga, which leads soul to the path of Ultimate knowledge, the Right knowledge Acharya Hari Bhadra Surijeehave said that activity as yoga which leads soul to its liberation –Moksha.

All the spiritual means- main or subsidiary, internal or external, knowledge- biased or activity biased for attaining Moksha there formal establishment and the spiritual perfectness achieved through them are yogas.

Rues for Yoga: There are certain rules and regulation to be observed and activities to be undertaken for development of soul and for performance of yogas. In Jainism, all these are known as “Yoga Sangraha” . They are 32 in number. These 32 sutras – strands are considered to be the basis of Yogs in Jainism.

Acharya Hari Bhadrasurijeehas mentioned about Purva Seva (Pre- service) in “Yoga Bindu”about Yoga Bija(seeds of Yoga) in “Yes, Drashtee Samuchhaya” an dabout performing of worldly religion / wordly duties in “Yoga statk”.

The proper formal procedure are essential for performance of Yogas. The procedures are of 5 types.

1.    Vishanusthan

2.    Garanusthan

3.    Ananusthan

4.    Tad Hetu Sthan

5.    Amrutanu Sthan

Of these five, first three are worldly. They have at least some connection with Attachment, passion etc. the remaining two are almost free of any such attachment etc. The person performing with these 2 donot wish for worldly happiness. That is why they are known as better Anusthan ( Sad Anusthan)

Five kinds of Yogas.

In Jainism 5 means have been recongnised as performance for Yogas.

1.   Sthan

2.    Urna

3.    Arth

4.    Alamban

5.    Analamban

From another view point, Acharya Hari Bhadra Surijee has categorised yogas in to three:

  1. Iccha (Wish) Yoga.
  2. Shastra (Scripture) Yoga.
  3. Samarthya (Strength) Yoga.

The Yoga Drashtees are eight in numbers:

  1. Mitra
  2. Tara
  3. Bala
  4. Dipra
  5. Sthira
  6. Kanta
  7. Prabha
  8. Para

The Navkar Mantra is recited either with pre-_________ of ‘ Ohm’ and ‘Rhim’ or with them. In both cases, the Navkar Mantra is equally effective and beneficial.
